The 10 Superstars who defined 2017

3 Alexa Bliss

Since arriving to WWE from NXT, Alexa Bliss has arguably been WWE’s most valuable female Superstar. 2017, however, was her true breakout year. The four-time Women’s Champion earned three of her four title reigns this year alone, becoming the first woman to win both the Raw and SmackDown Women’s Titles.

In fact, there wasn’t a month in 2017 where Bliss wasn’t carrying a title around her waist. And considering she had to defend the gold against the likes of Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks and Bayley, it’s hard to imagine many other Superstars topping that resumé. Five Feet of Fury never seemed so tall. — SCOTT TAYLOR

Raw Commissioner Stephanie McMahon announced the first-ever Women’s Royal Rumble Match

Dec. 18

Absolution technically lost their announced match against Bayley, Sasha Banks & Mickie James by disqualification when Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville ganged up on Banks. That aggression brought out Nia Jax, who dropped Rose and Deville with a double Samoan Drop, and the rest of the Women’s division bolted to the ring when Paige took Nia down with a chop block. Raw Commissioner Stephanie McMahon’s entrance stopped the action cold right as the brawl was beginning to escalate, but nobody could have predicted what was going to happen next.
The Commissioner’s arrival typically precedes some kind of discipline, but she had something else in mind for the division: An opportunity. After reminding the women of the strides they had made over the past two years and the barriers they continue to break, Stephanie announced that they would make history yet again this January with the first-ever Women’s Royal Rumble Match, an announcement that stirred up powerful emotions in every Superstar from Sasha Banks to Paige to Mickie James, Alicia Fox and Dana Brooke. Raw may be going live on Christmas next week, but this will be a difficult gift to top.

Absolution attacked Asuka

For two weeks now, Absolution has threatened to make an example out of Asuka. This week, they went and did it, though it didn’t quite go as they planned.

But before everything went south, the trio of Paige, Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville did indeed throw down against The Empress of Tomorrow moments after dispatching her planned opponent, Alicia Fox, in the backstage area. Trapping Asuka in the ring, Paige laid out her terms to the undefeated Superstar — move or be moved — and sicced the entirety of Absolution on The Empress of Tomorrow when Asuka refused to comply.

The former NXT Women’s Champion was struggling against the three-on-one onslaught, but the arrival of the entire Raw Women’s division more than evened the scales. The combined efforts of Team Red ladies didn’t just neutralize Absolution — it sent them into retreat for the very first time.

Sasha Banks and Alexa Bliss get emotional after competing in Abu Dhabi’s first Women’s match

Earlier today, Sasha Banks battled Alexa Bliss for the Raw Women’s Championship in Abu Dhabi, marking the first time female Superstars competed in a WWE match not only in the United Arab Emirates capital city, but in the UAE as a whole.

This historic bout also marked the first time the Raw Women’s Title was defended in the Middle East region.

The Boss, donning special ring gear in keeping with local customs, could hardly hold back her emotions following the match.

“Right before I went out, I just started crying … I just thought about how huge this is, and … it’s bigger than me,” Banks said. ““The moment I walked out there, and the moment the announcer announced that this was going to be a Women’s match, you can hear the crowd care. The moment I stood out there and saw … little girls … it made everything worth it, because this is what I feel I was put on this Earth to do. I want to make a change in the world, I want to empower women, and I want them to know that their dreams are endless and they can achieve anything.”
During the match, the crowd chanted “This is hope,” which resonated deeply with the four-time Raw Women’s Champion.

“We’ve come such a long way, not even just in WWE, but in the whole world,” Sasha said. “This is something that I’m going to remember for the rest of my life, and I can’t thank the fans enough, because they inspired me tonight.”

The defending Raw Women’s Champion was equally inspired, thanking the WWE Universe in Abu Dhabi following the title bout.
The emotion surrounding the match wasn’t lost on Triple H, who tweeted a pre-match photo from Abu Dhabi with the caption, “That moment when you make history on a worldwide level …”

Will Paige, Man

dy Rose and Sonya Deville’s rampage continue?

The Raw Women’s division is officially on notice. During a Fatal 4-Way Match to determine Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss’ next challenger, Paige returned to WWE after more than a year, with NXT’s Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville in tow. The trio laid out Bayley, Sasha Banks, Mickie James and Alicia Fox in ruthless fashion, but they didn’t stop there. When Little Miss Bliss attempted to welcome Paige and her new allies to Team Red, Alexa suffered the same fate as her would-be challengers.

The entire WWE Universe is anxiously waiting to see what Paige, Mandy and Sonya will do next. Who will be their next target?

How will Alexa Bliss, The Miz and “The Bar” handle defeat to SmackDown LIVE?

Despite Raw’s impressive showing last night, four of Team Red’s most boastful Superstars — Intercontinental Champion The Miz, Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss and Raw Tag Team Champions Cesaro & Sheamus — were momentarily silenced by U.S. Champion Baron Corbin, SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair and SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Usos, respectively.

Although Team Red ultimately won the night, those losses had to sting. How will The A-Lister, Little Miss Bliss and “The Bar” respond to these disappointing defeats?

     WWE Survivor Series Results

SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair def. Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss

Charlotte Flair’s SmackDown Women’s Championship victory this past Tuesday on SmackDown LIVE brought not only a new matchup to Survivor Series, but also a battle between, arguably, 2017’s two most dominant female Superstars.

It should come as no surprise then that a big fight feel filled the air in Houston’s Toyota Center as the only two women to ever hold both the Raw and SmackDown Women’s Titles squared off in head-to-head competition.

Flair immediately used her size and strength advantages to take control. Bliss was not afraid, though, turning the tides by viciously dropping Charlotte to the floor two separate times. Little Miss Bliss’ attacks were continuous, giving Flair no breathing room whatsoever (that guillotine, anyone?) and having an answer for every comeback The Queen attempted to mount.

Flair was finally able to get back into the contest with a desperation powerbomb that evened the playing field. From there, the two busted out their best with Five Feet of Fury kicking out of Natural Selection and avoiding a picture-perfect moonsault. Flair escaped defeat from Bliss’ signature DDT by getting her foot on the bottom rope just in the nick of time.

The SmackDown Women’s Champion powered on, despite her ribs having been brutalized throughout the duration of the contest. She connected with a jaw breaking kick to Bliss’ face before locking in the Figure-Eight Leglock for the win to give SmackDown a 3-2 advantage on the scorecard.

Typically, deities outrank royal figures. On this night, however, The Goddess bowed down to The Queen.

Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss vs. SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair

Bliss, meet Flair.

Alexa Bliss’ month of preparation for SmackDown Women’s Champion Natalya went out the window after Charlotte Flair dethroned The Queen of Harts as Team Blue’s titleholder, setting up a Champion vs. Champion Match at Survivor Series between the only two Superstars to hold the Women’s Titles of both brands.

Alexa’s story as Raw Women’s Champion is well known by this point: After starting the year as SmackDown Women’s Champion, she moved to the red side in the Superstar Shake-up and held down the fort for the most of 2017, denying challengers such as Bayley, Sasha Banks, Nia Jax and Mickie James.

Charlotte, on the other hand, has been in the unfamiliar position of chasing a title for most of this year: After losing the Raw Women’s Title to Bayley in January, she came to SmackDown LIVE in the Superstar Shake-up and found Team Blue’s top prize to be just beyond her grasp. She had even been set to compete on the Women’s Survivor Series team after defeating Natalya by disqualification — but not winning the title — at WWE Hell in a Cell.

However, a last-minute ruling by SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon gave The Nature Girl one more opportunity at the title, and Charlotte did not disappoint, defeating Natalya to win her first SmackDown Women’s Championship. The emotional victory prompted a celebration with her father, Ric Flair, who made a surprise appearance — his first after a major health scare — to congratulate his daughter.

With her classically flippant attitude toward her challengers, Alexa is likely unimpressed by this comeback, which, in fairness, is the same song she’s been singing for a while now: After WWE TLC, the Raw Talk panel floated the idea about what would happen if Alexa were to face Charlotte, and “The Goddess of WWE” was dismissive at best. That attitude certainly reflects her skills as champion, but now, it’s a response she can no longer afford.

Tune in to Survivor Series to see which woman will claim victory in the head-to-head competition for brand supremacy, streaming live on the award-winning WWE Network this Sunday at a special start time of 7 ET/4 PT.
