Alexa Bliss def. Sasha Banks to become the new Raw Women’s Champion

The Brooklyn Curse may have been broken, but Sasha Banks fell victim to yet another bit of bad juju that has dogged her: losing the Raw Women’s Championship in her first defense.

This time, Alexa Bliss dethroned The Boss in their SummerSlam rematch to become a two-time Raw Women’s Champion, though Bliss certainly isn’t about to saunter into the sunset unscathed. The Boss was firmly in control of the bout and well on her way to fulfilling a pre-match promise to make Little Miss Bliss tap out, despite having taken a couple of strong forearms to the face. But the wily Alexa bounced Sasha gullet-first off the top rope and planted her nemesis with a brutal DDT for the win.

Sasha’s night wasn’t over, as Nia Jax made her way to the squared circle to congratulate Alexa before splashing The Boss in the corner and hoisting Alexa on her shoulders. That said, Alexa’s night wasn’t over either, as Nia backdropped Bliss off her shoulders and held the Raw Women’s Title over her head. Alexa might call that rude. But she should know, when it comes to the title, there’s no such thing.

Sasha Banks def. Emma and Alicia Fox in a Triple Threat Qualifying Match
It’s official: The shoulder injury Bayley suffered last week will keep The Huggable One out of SummerSlam, which means the field for Alexa Bliss’ Raw Women’s Title is wide open. And Bayley’s preferred substitute — Sasha Banks — got one step closer to Little Miss Bliss only moments after Bayley addressed the WWE Universe and bowed out of contention.

In the first of two Triple Threat Qualifying Matches, The Boss surged past Alicia Fox and Emma, though the Australian grappler proved her mettle as a persistent foil to Banks throughout the match. Not only did Emma nearly take Sasha out of commission by targeting her back, but when The Boss locked Fox in the Bank Statement, Emma rolled her off into a pinfall attempt. Some quick thinking from The Boss, however, landed Emma in the same hold, this one good enough to earn the tapout victory.

Bayley def. Nia Jax via Count-out

As it turns out, Alexa Bliss couldn’t be happier that Bayley will be the one to challenge her at SummerSlam — she had no desire to face Sasha Banks again and sees The Huggable One as slim pickings after beating her for the Raw Women’s Title in the first place.

That Bayley had to take on Nia Jax without Banks in the building seemed to drastically hurt The Huggable One’s odds, especially after Nia left her with a banged-up shoulder. When The Huggable One managed to even the odds and take the fight to the outside, Bliss intervened and Bayley managed to hold her off and claim a count-out victory after she olé’d Nia into the steel steps.

Bayley wasn’t so bold as to throw down with both Superstars with only one good arm, but perhaps her title hopes aren’t quite as slim as Little Miss Bliss would like to believe.

The comeback kid is heading back to her home turf.

Bayley powered past Sasha Banks in a grueling bout between best friends to earn an opportunity against Alexa Bliss at SummerSlam, sending The Huggable One back to the site of one of her biggest triumphs to potentially complete a remarkable rebound run back to the Raw Women’s Title.

Banks, somewhat surprisingly, seemed to be almost looking past Bayley in the lead-up to this match, focusing more on her desire to punish Bliss in a pre-match powwow than on how to defeat The Huggable One. All she would say of the match was that “the best woman” would win.

True to Bliss’ own prediction earlier in the night, friendship did kind of go out the window — Bayley hung so tough that the two women resorted to a hockey-style fight at one point — and it came down to the absolute wire, as Bayley kicked out of a Frog Splash and instantly rolled up Sasha for three.

Alexa, who was on commentary for the match, didn’t miss the opportunity to hit the squared circle and flaunt her title in the face of her challenger. SummerSlam is set. May the best woman win.

Bayley def. Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss
Don’t count Bayley out just yet.

Fresh off pinning Alexa Bliss in tag team action seven days ago, Bayley scored a singles win over the reigning Raw Women’s Champion in a non-title bout, closing the gap between her and The Wicked Witch of WWE, who has held the entire Women’s division at arm’s length for months.

Nia Jax, who had prowled at ringside for the entire match, attempted to tilt the odds in Bliss’ favor, but Sasha Banks arrived to neutralize the intruder, providing Bayley with one of her clutch assists. The Huggable One capitalized on the suddenly-even playing field with a punishing Bayley-to-Belly for the win.

Sasha Banks & Bayley def. Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss & Nia Jax

The Raw Women’s Title picture runs on Boss Time now, and if Alexa Bliss wasn’t thrilled that Sasha Banks earned the right to challenge her this Sunday by whittling Nia Jax down to a submission, imagine how the champ felt this week when Banks straight-up beat her.

Granted, the victory came in a tag team match that united Banks & Bayley against Bliss & Jax, but the outcome had to be disconcerting to Little Miss Bliss all the same — especially since Jax took Bayley out of the match in the early goings by kneeing her so hard in the head she injured herself in the process. The Boss toughed out the 2-on-1 disadvantage nonetheless, superkicking Jax in the tweaked knee and locking Bliss in the Bank Statement for a near-instant submission win.

For weeks, the entire Raw Women’s division has been fighting among itself to get an opportunity at Alexa Bliss. And, in a historic Women’s Gauntlet Match to determine who will contend for the Raw Women’s Title at the WWE Great Balls of Fire pay-per-view, one woman finally rose above the pack to get such an opportunity: Sasha Banks.

Not only that, se had to go through the toughest possible opponent to do it: No. 2 entrant Nia Jax started off by snuffing out Bayley’s (No. 1) attempt to get back in the orbit of the Raw Women’s Title and followed up by dispatching Mickie James, Dana Brooke and Emma at Nos. 3, 4 and 5, respectively, before The Boss finally made her entrance at No. 6.

Despite a veritable onslaught by the powerful Jax, Banks chipped away at her foe slowly by simply refusing to stay down, finally finding daylight with a Shining Wizard and muscling Nia down with a modified Bank Statement that earned the submission. Raw General Manager Kurt Angle arrived to congratulate Banks; Bliss to mean-mug her, but Banks got the last word by dropkicking the champ and snatching the Raw Women’s Title for a demoralizing game of keep-away.

Of course, complacency is not an option. One big fight is over, but another is two weeks away.

Nia Jax def. Sasha Banks via Disqualification

How to sum up the Raw Women’s division in one sentence? “Everybody Hates Alexa Bliss.” (SmackDown LIVE’s, for what it’s worth, is “Everybody Hates James Ellsworth.”) When the Raw Women’s Champion sat ringside for Sasha Banks vs. Nia Jax — ostensibly to watch her “best friend” destroy The Boss — Emma saw an opening to confront the champ over ditching her last week and did just that, sending Alexa scurrying into the ring and hiding behind Jax, who didn’t seem all that interested in protecting her.

Nia eagerly handed Alexa over to Emma, but the Australian’s boot missed its target and hit Nia instead, handing her a DQ win and instigating a brawl that ended up including Bliss, Banks, Jax, Emma, Dana Brooke and Mickie James. Bliss managed to get Jax and Emma on the same page long enough to overwhelm the other three Superstars, and it was only the arrival of Bayley that finally tipped the scales and forced Alexa, Nia and Emma into retreat.

Sasha Banks, Mickie James & Dana Brooke def. Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss, Nia Jax & Emma

True, Alexa Bliss did manage to hang on to her Raw Women’s Title on a technicality last week. But she put herself in the unenviable position of having nearly every woman in the Team Red ladies’ locker room — including a returning Emma — gunning for her prize.

A confrontation between Bliss and the assembled women of Raw — minus Bayley, who still hasn’t competed since losing her title rematch — led to a Six-Woman Tag among champion and would-be contenders, during which all Bliss’ opponents — Sasha Banks in particular — wanted a piece of her. When Sasha had Emma on the ropes, Alexa did the only thing she could do: Ditched the match before she could be tagged in, leaving Emma to suffer a match-ending Bank Statement after Mickie James took out Nia Jax.

Of course, Six-Woman Tags don’t decide titles, and Alexa’s championship reign isn’t in danger of ending anytime soon. But in terms of shoring up allies for the fight to come, it’s hard not to think she might look back on this as a missed opportunit
