For weeks, the entire Raw Women’s division has been fighting among itself to get an opportunity at Alexa Bliss. And, in a historic Women’s Gauntlet Match to determine who will contend for the Raw Women’s Title at the WWE Great Balls of Fire pay-per-view, one woman finally rose above the pack to get such an opportunity: Sasha Banks.

Not only that, se had to go through the toughest possible opponent to do it: No. 2 entrant Nia Jax started off by snuffing out Bayley’s (No. 1) attempt to get back in the orbit of the Raw Women’s Title and followed up by dispatching Mickie James, Dana Brooke and Emma at Nos. 3, 4 and 5, respectively, before The Boss finally made her entrance at No. 6.

Despite a veritable onslaught by the powerful Jax, Banks chipped away at her foe slowly by simply refusing to stay down, finally finding daylight with a Shining Wizard and muscling Nia down with a modified Bank Statement that earned the submission. Raw General Manager Kurt Angle arrived to congratulate Banks; Bliss to mean-mug her, but Banks got the last word by dropkicking the champ and snatching the Raw Women’s Title for a demoralizing game of keep-away.

Of course, complacency is not an option. One big fight is over, but another is two weeks away.

Nia Jax def. Sasha Banks via Disqualification

How to sum up the Raw Women’s division in one sentence? “Everybody Hates Alexa Bliss.” (SmackDown LIVE’s, for what it’s worth, is “Everybody Hates James Ellsworth.”) When the Raw Women’s Champion sat ringside for Sasha Banks vs. Nia Jax — ostensibly to watch her “best friend” destroy The Boss — Emma saw an opening to confront the champ over ditching her last week and did just that, sending Alexa scurrying into the ring and hiding behind Jax, who didn’t seem all that interested in protecting her.

Nia eagerly handed Alexa over to Emma, but the Australian’s boot missed its target and hit Nia instead, handing her a DQ win and instigating a brawl that ended up including Bliss, Banks, Jax, Emma, Dana Brooke and Mickie James. Bliss managed to get Jax and Emma on the same page long enough to overwhelm the other three Superstars, and it was only the arrival of Bayley that finally tipped the scales and forced Alexa, Nia and Emma into retreat.

Sasha Banks, Mickie James & Dana Brooke def. Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss, Nia Jax & Emma

True, Alexa Bliss did manage to hang on to her Raw Women’s Title on a technicality last week. But she put herself in the unenviable position of having nearly every woman in the Team Red ladies’ locker room — including a returning Emma — gunning for her prize.

A confrontation between Bliss and the assembled women of Raw — minus Bayley, who still hasn’t competed since losing her title rematch — led to a Six-Woman Tag among champion and would-be contenders, during which all Bliss’ opponents — Sasha Banks in particular — wanted a piece of her. When Sasha had Emma on the ropes, Alexa did the only thing she could do: Ditched the match before she could be tagged in, leaving Emma to suffer a match-ending Bank Statement after Mickie James took out Nia Jax.

Of course, Six-Woman Tags don’t decide titles, and Alexa’s championship reign isn’t in danger of ending anytime soon. But in terms of shoring up allies for the fight to come, it’s hard not to think she might look back on this as a missed opportunit

Nia Jax def. Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss via Disqualification

A few weeks ago, Alexa Bliss recruited Nia Jax to her side with the promise of a future Raw Women’s Title Match should she get past Bayley unscathed. Well, Alexa’s still champ after WWE Extreme Rules, and on Raw it was time to pay the piper. Bliss retained her title thanks to a technicality and what may have been a canny bit of planning.

Seeking to replicate the strategy that joined her and Jax up in the first place, Bliss went to the Women’s locker room seeking help — anyone’s help — against Jax. With the exception of Sasha Banks, who dismissed Alexa outright, the ladies all said they’d rather just sit at ringside and watch Bliss get destroyed, which led the champ to run her entire division down throughout the night.

When Jax inevitably tossed Alexa to the outside during what was shaping up to be a one-sided win, Little Miss Bliss shoved Dana Brooke and Mickie James to instigate a brawl, handing herself a disqualification win and conveniently keeping the title around her waist.

Even more conveniently, Little Miss Bliss got out of Dodge right as Jax took out her frustrations on anything that moved, leaving Dana and Mickie in a heap while the champ made herself scarce.

Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss def. Bayley

Alexa Bliss retained the Raw Women’s Championship against Bayley at WWE Extreme Rules in a Kendo Stick on a Pole Match.

Prior to their clash, questions circled whether Bayley would actually use the Kendo stick if given the chance. She insisted that she scouted ECW highlights and would be extreme enough to use the Kendo stick at will. However, her hesitation in the match cost her the chance to regain the Raw Women’s Championship.

In the Kendo Stick on a Pole Match, the first competitor to retrieve the punishing piece of bamboo would be allowed to use it at will on her opponent. So, when the opening bell rang, Alexa quickly ran up the turnbuckle to reach for the Kendo stick. The rivals jostled for position on the top turnbuckle multiple times, even knocking each other to the ringside floor as the foreign object fell to the mat. With the race to get the Kendo stick heating up, Bayley suplexed the champion to the mat, allowing her to grab the foreign object, but The Huggable One waited too long to use it after cornering The Wicked Witch of WWE.

A brief pause was all Alexa needed to spear the challenger and grab the Kendo stick before swinging away like Baltimore Orioles star Adam Jones, who happened to be watching at ringside, dressed as Virgil. A Bayley-to-Belly Suplex briefly ended the barrage, but a DDT from Bliss secured the victory.

Anyone who doubts Bliss in the slightest can look at the welts covering Bayley’s body and know that it will take something supernatural to get the Raw Women’s Championship off “The Goddess of WWE’s” waist.

Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss presented “Bayley: This Is Your Life”

Many moons ago, Mankind presented The Rock with “This Is Your Life” as a sign of his friendship. But on this week’s Raw, Alexa Bliss emceed a sinister variation of the legendary ceremony with the sole intent of exposing Bayley as a softie who couldn’t get extreme enough to defeat her in a Kendo Stick on a Pole Match this Sunday.

Bliss brought out Bayley’s old teacher, childhood friend and ex-boyfriend, all of whom offered some variation of the testimony that the former Raw Women’s Champion was too nice for her own good. She might still be: When Bayley brawled with Alexa following The Wicked Witch of WWE’s fighting words, the champ once again drilled Bayley with a Kendo stick and sent her No. 1 contender in retreat, leaving The Huggable One humiliated, hurt and with more questions than answers as Sunday’s title match approaches.

Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss def. Mickie James
170_RAW_05222017hm_4065--0910e48d1489afa4865e590a743c5769.jpg

Last week, Alexa Bliss went to town on Bayley with a Kendo stick and, while the attack led to a Kendo Stick on a Pole stipulation for their title rematch (short version: Whoever grabs the stick first gets to use it), it didn’t sit well at all with The Huggable One’s friend, Mickie James. So, the onetime La Luchadora attempted to teach the Raw Women’s Champion a lesson on Monday night, though Bliss quickly flipped the syllabus on its head for the veteran Superstar.

It only took one big move to do it, too, as Mickie had been in the driver’s seat for the majority of the match until The Goddess of WWE straight-up punched James in the face. Bliss pounced with her DDT to win the match, then produced the Kendo stick to dispatch James. She only got one hit in, though, before Bayley rushed the ring and seized hold of the equalizer, sending Bliss scurrying in wide-eyed terror.

Bayley confronted Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss

Alexa Bliss’ Raw Women’s Title victory tour has been a whirlwind of impeccable side-eye and scathing insults thus far, but the “Goddess of WWE” may have finally pushed her favorite target to the breaking point.

Moments into her evisceration of the city of Newark, Bliss was interrupted by former Raw Women’s Champion Bayley, who announced she was exercising her rematch clause for WWE Extreme Rules, resulting in another round of bone-deep mockery by the champion, who insisted Bayley was too timid to get “extreme.”

It was enough for The Huggable One to shove Alexa out of the ring, but The Wicked Witch of WWE responded quickly, producing a Kendo stick from under the canvas and laying Bayley out with a single, surgical swing.

If The Huggable One wasn’t quite ready for extreme, however, the good news is she’ll have an opportunity at redemption: Following Alexa’s attack, Bayley successfully petitioned Angle to add an extreme stipulation to their rematch, and he agreed in the form of a Kendo Stick on a Pole Match.

Raw Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss def. Mickie James

The only woman Alexa Bliss didn’t trash talk during her “coronation” last week was Nia Jax. This week, the WWE Universe found out why.

The powerful Jax accompanied Little Miss Bliss to the ring for her non-title match against her former ally Mickie James, claiming she would be Bliss’ “best friend” provided the champion granted her a title match as soon as she had put Bayley in the rearview. The Huggable One herself wasn’t far from the action either, serving as Mickie’s muscle in a confrontation that quickly tilted James’ way. (The audience’s chants of Toni Basil’s “Mickey” didn’t hurt as a motivator).

In fact, Mickie gained such an advantage that Nia attempted to (literally) trip her up on the top turnbuckle, and while Bayley was quick to neutralize the interference, Alexa doomed Mickie with a forearm to the face. When The Huggable One chased Bliss up the ramp following the match, Jax lingered behind, pulverizing James in a harrowing bit of post-match devastation.
